Kankakee, IL – State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) is hosting a drive to address the problems struggling mothers and families face in ensuring a sufficient supply of diapers to keep an infant or toddler clean, dry, and healthy. After last year’s successful drive, Rep. Parkhurst seeks to continue recognizing this need in the community. Donations will directly benefit local mothers in need and will be distributed at National Night Out on August 7th.
“As a community, we are measured most by how we take care of those challenged economically and struggling to make ends meet,” Rep Parkhurst said. “Surprisingly, government assistance programs, like food stamps, cannot be used to purchase diapers. I am asking residents to help me address this important need in our community.”
In addition to diapers, the drive will collect baby wipes and diaper rash cream. In Illinois 52% of births are covered by Medicaid and 23% of families live below the poverty line. However, there are no government subsidies to help purchase diapers and wipes, products which are taxed at the highest sales tax rate. Diapers and other items will be collected at Rep. Parkhurst’s district office at 370 E Court Street in Kankakee, from now until August 6th. Amazon delivery service is able to mail donations directly to the office.
