State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst to Host Human Trafficking Summit

Kankakee, IL – State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) is bringing together experts and industry insiders for a Human Trafficking Summit at Olivet Nazarene University. The event, free and open to the public, is intended to shine a light on the endemic but little-known practice of human trafficking. The summit is September 28, 2017, at Wisner Auditorium, Olivet Nazarene University,  from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

“Human trafficking is a horrible practice with millions of victims each year.” Part of my role as a state legislator is to help raise awareness of these major yet undiscussed issues,” Rep. Parkhurst said about the summit.

Human trafficking is an international multi-billion dollar industry with an estimated 21 million victims worldwide. Human trafficking comes in various forms including forced labor and commercial sex including approximately 1 in 6 endangered runaway children. There is no official estimate of U.S. victims, but hundreds of thousands of Americans are suspected to be victims. 91% of human trafficking cases are women.

Rep. Parkhurst added, “My goal is to help educate and empower residents of the 79th district to help end this horrific practice.”

Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for cases of human trafficking and Chicago is considered to be a national hub for human trafficking because of the role it plays as a major convention city. The summit will feature a panel of experts from local businesses to law enforcement.
