On Friday, State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst toured the Greater Kankakee Area airport with facility managers and local leaders including Kankakee Mayor Nina Epstein Kankakee Sheriff Mike Downey, and Major David Helfrich.
The tour provided an update on the new national guard center, which began construction in late 2014. The new facility will be a vital Illinois hub for flight training and maintenance as well as the storage of up to 13 UM-60 Blackhawk helicopters. The expansion of the airport through the new National Guard facility is primarily federally funded and expected to be complete in early summer.
Upon completion, the LED silver rated building will be one of the largest facilities of its kind for the National Guard nationwide.
